Week of January 30th

Another busy week in store for 5W.

I will be available after school on Tuesday and Thursday of this week for those of you who would like to complete homework or in-class assignments or prepare for upcoming assessments. The hours are from 3:15 to 4:00.

On Wednesday, Ms. Patsy Eldridge will be back in to the Proctor School to demonstrate why we experience seasons on Earth. She will perform a hands-on demonstration during  a 45-minute period after which, the students should have a good handle on the importance of the Earth rotating on its axis and how the angle of the axis affects our seasons.

Assessments for the week:

1. Reading vocabulary on Tuesday
2. Causes of the American Revolution on Wednesday
3. Unit 7 Math test on Friday.

We are still collecting toiletry items for Littlebrook Village until the 13th of February. Any donation that you can make is greatly appreciated.

On Friday, the entire 5th grade enjoyed a visit from Freeverse Poetry and were introduced to Poetry Slam. Following are some photos taken during the event:

New Blog and 5W Update

Hopefully this blog will do a better job of keeping families up with what is happening in 5W during the school year. I will try to include special events, upcoming assessments and projects, as well as special collections that we are doing at school for certain organizations. Let's get started.

  • Tomorrow, and for the next three (3) Fridays, the entire 5th grade will be immersed in poetry as representatives of Slam Poetry will be visiting the school for three (3) hours each Friday. The students will be going through the process of writing original poems, rehearsing them, and then putting on a full grade performance of the poetry on the final Friday of the program, February 17th.
  • Next week will be a busy week in terms of assessements for 5W. On Tuesday, January 31st we will be taking an assessment on the vocabulrary that we have studied thus far in our reading book, Loser, by Jerry Spenelli. On Wednesday, February 1st, we will be taking a Social Studies quiz on Causes of the American Revolution. Students have been given a guide to assist them in this quiz and we will doing an extensive review next week. Finally, on Friday, February 3rd we will be taking a Math assessment on Unit 7, Decimal Work and Basic Probability. We will wrapping the unit up at the beginning of next week and then reviewing before the assessment.
  • The annual collection for Littlebrook Village has started and will run until February 13th. Toiletry items, note cards, knitting goods, and some food items would be appropriate for the students to donate for this cause. Tissues, soap, and toothpaste are always in demand. Your contribution to this worthy cause is always appreciated.
I hope families find this helpful. As I become more familiar with this product I will be assigning passwords so students and/or families are able to post responses.
